Are you an Empath?

Are you sensitive to other people’s energy? Do you feel their emotions, sense things they do not say and feel drained after being around others?

Do you become easily overstimulated, feel isolated and like you don’t fit in?

These are some signs that you may be an empath or HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) and according to studies this is true for about 20% of the population. (It is argued that there are differences between the two but that is not the purpose of this discussion so I’ll keep things general.)

While many see this as a curse and often ask me how to stop taking on other people’s energies and how to stop feeling so exhausted, it truly is a gift once you learn what is going on and how to manage it.

Empaths are not “over-sensitive” they simply have a gift they must learn how to use effectively 

Empaths contribute to society with their creative, intuitive and heart-centred approach to life, and as consciousness evolves on the planet empaths are on the leading edge of that change, guiding humanity into a space of deeper compassion, vulnerability and awareness.

One of the most important pieces of advice I can offer here is to remind you of these qualities and to let you know that you are like a vast, enticing pool of healing waters for every lost soul and troubled being for miles. They sense your big heart and depth of compassion and they are drawn to it like moths to a flame.

Here’s the important part: If you do not take care of yourself they will drown you in your own pool!

They do not do this intentionally, but you will kindly take all of their stress and negativity out of the goodness of your heart because you want to help people and you hate to see them suffering. The more people you do this with the more you can start to become depressed, stress, heavy, overeat, over-emotional and so on.

If you take care of you, your empathic gifts will contribute to others in the most amazing ways. You will inspire and delight, you will shine your light and you will be a bridge to a deeper level of consciousness. The world is truly waiting for you.

Tips for Self-Care

  1. Vote with your Feet – when you feel yourself getting overstimulated leave the situation immediately. Go outside, walk in nature, leave the party, find a quiet space, go to bed, slow everything down so you can regain your balance. Enduring any energetically overwhelming situation is unkind to you.
  2. Use your voice – explain to friends and family (as much as possible) that you are sensitive to energy and sometimes need to leave social situations early. They will learn to accept this, or they will think you are weird. Either way, it’s not your problem.
  3. Trigger Points – you may have your own specific triggers that you are aware of and can minimise where possible. Here’s a few common ones: large crowds, anything noisy and chaotic, traffic, negative people, low blood sugar, overworking, harsh chemicals or environments, watching the news or violent movies, energy vampires (these people will seek you out for your delicious energy leaving you feeling like you feeling like all life has been sucked out of you).
  4. Create your own space – you need time out from all the crazy and this is imperative. Let your family know that even 15 minutes is required each day just for you. It may be outside at night in the moonlight, a comfortable and nurturing space in your home, among the plants in your garden where you can just sit and rejuvenate.
  5. It’s not yours – remember that the energies you pick up are not yours. You will think they are because they seem so real and immediate, however, 99% of all thoughts, feelings and emotions you are aware of are not yours. Remember this next time you feel sad or depressed and ask “Is this energy mine?” If you get a sense that it’s not yours simply ask the universe to return it to its source as you take a deep breath and let it go.
  6. Rescue Remedies – these are great for negative energy build ups when you have trouble getting away from an overwhelming situation
  • Lightening Hands – Imagine all the energy gathering in your hands then count to three, and flick your hands out in front as if trying to flick the energy from your hands. Do this about 5 to 10 times (use your intuition, you’ll know).
  • Conscious Breathing – take some slow deep breaths into your belly. Let everything else fall away and just be with your breath for a few minutes. Then allow the energies around you to sink into the earth. Mentally say “Release and dissipate” numerous times.
  1. Water Therapy – take a shower, go for a swim, or wash your hands. Water is soothing to your soul, it is healing and rejuvenating for you and will wash away a lot of stuck energies. You can even imagine the energies flowing down the drain as you enjoy the water.

Being an empath has been a bonus for me as a healer, I sense people’s feelings and emotions as if they were my own, which allows me to have a very intuitive sense of what my clients require and how best to help them. As a child this was overwhelming and I learned behaviours to stuff down all this awareness and pretend I didn’t notice it. Now that I have a better understanding of this I acknowledge that it is truly a gift and while it takes a little practice you can begin to honour this gift within you right away.

The Contribution of Being You

In Access Consciousness there’s a mantra that goes “All of life comes to me with ease and joy and glory”. (Glory being the exuberant expression and abundance of life.) Many people think this means that if you are a conscious and aware person that life suddenly becomes perfect and you never experience challenging situations. Rather, it’s all about the energy you be and how you handle whatever is going on around you.

Yesterday I was waiting for a lady to reverse out of a car park at my local shopping centre when suddenly she hit the accelerator instead of the brake and launched back into my car. In that split second I knew that she was going to hit me, I knew that it had nothing to do with me but I was there to be a contribution in some way. When I got out of my car I could see that she was highly distressed, she had a disabled passenger and was driving a hire car that she was obviously unfamiliar with. As we went through the process of exchanging details I was aware of having no point of view about the whole thing, I didn’t go into the wrongness, in fact, I was barely aware of myself and my car. I was more aware of myself as an Infinite Being and aware of the lady who kept thanking me for not getting angry with her.

When I arrived home shortly after, I was aware of an energy shift occurring, it was like a mini earthquake in my energetic field and for a moment I felt a slight dizziness which quickly passed. I knew that something greater had occurred here but it wasn’t until this morning as I lay in bed pondering the occurrence that I gained deeper clarity.

This lady and myself had both been aware of earth energies building up (I would have to say that this lady was possibly a bit autistic as well), and I had been there to absorb these energies that were being expressed through her.  In other words, the earth had required this facilitation which possibly prevented the expression of this energy on a greater scale.

As I write this, I know that I know how to absorb these energies from the earth, to be a type of transformer that can dissipate energy with total ease, but this is not something that I was really consciously aware of before.  And, interestingly, I have been doing lots of energy flows with the earth over the past few weeks, and also facilitating the Communion of Body & Being classes, which deepens our connection with the earth and all things.

The “accident” itself barely registered with me, we both have insurance, the damages were minor, no injuries, and there will be no cost to myself except perhaps some small inconvenience of having my car off the road for a day or two. But the reason I am sharing this story is because this situation was handled with total ease and through this experience I have become aware of another capacity that I have and the contribution that I can be in a totally different way.

In the past I would have thought of a car accident as something being “wrong”, I would have gone into guilt and think that these things shouldn’t happen to conscious people, but all of that is a judgement. When we approach life from a space of no judgement nothing can ever be wrong, it’s only an experience and what if that experience contributes to you and others and the planet in some way?

So when we say “All of life comes to me with ease and joy and glory”, it’s not about perfection, it’s about being you. We live in a world that has so much pain and suffering and where horrible things happen all the time, but you don’t have to be at the effect of this, you can be the change that you want to see in the world, you can be a contribution to others and to the planet just by being you. What would it take for you to know, be, perceive and receive that with total ease? What capacities do you have that you have not yet acknowledged? If you ask these questions (not to find an answer, but to gain awareness) the universe will show you.

Are you disconnected from your feelings and emotions?

feelings 2I meet a surprising number of people who are going through life “flat-lining”. This is a term I use to describe someone’s inability to feel any real depth of emotion. There are no wild highs or crappy lows, like most people have. They spend each day just going through the day to day motions of life.

“Depression” is a term sometimes used to describe this and if we define the root word “depress” we think of something being pushed down, lowered or dulled. And that is exactly what happens to varying degrees. Some people are clinically diagnosed with depression, while others may go through life seemingly quite happy on the surface, yet without any real passion or personal fulfilment.

An example of this could be a woman who marries and has children and over many years forgets her own personal dreams and goals to take care of her family. Life deals a few heavy blows and she learns to shut down emotionally and just get on with life. She does everything for everyone else and may be quite content with her family, but her own needs have taken a back seat to those around her.

This can happen for many reasons, from subconscious beliefs that she is not good enough and must therefore do things for others to be liked, or perhaps she has experienced some trauma and learned to push her feelings down to keep herself safe. No matter the reason, the most important thing is how to change this, and I offer some ideas below:

  1. Reconnecting with feelings and emotions

One of the simplest ways to do this is through Conscious Breathing. This is where you place your awareness on each breath as you breathe deep down into your belly. Keep your shoulders and chest fairly still as you allow the belly to rise like a balloon.

This method will seem too simple, but I constantly see students who take the time to practise this and are amazed by the results. It will get energy flowing through your entire body, which helps to clear blocks/stuck energy very organically – no forcing or manipulating . It grounds and centres you and connects you with your divinity.

Try the following exercise to release blocked energy and reconnect with your feelings/emotions:

As you do the Conscious Breathing, just notice how you feel. If you feel nothing/depressed, then just allow yourself to sit there connecting with this nothingness/depression. Allow it to be ok to be like that (because most often we are taught to pretend we feel fine when we don’t). The more you stop fighting what is happening within you, the more easily the energy will begin to shift.

Just keep breathing and noticing how you feel. Notice if it changes or if some emotions come up.

Let’s say you notice some sadness. Just be aware of this sadness and as you breathe begin to allow this feeling of sadness to expand and become more. Fear may rise here because you have learned to push down your feelings, but remember it’s all just energy. Give yourself permission to do this and release this old pattern. Keep breathing and noticing how you feel. Eventually you will feel a shift take place.

You see, sadness, anger, grief etc are all just stuck energy and when you allow yourself to BE PRESENT and let the energy flow freely it will release the blocks quite easily. Yes, there may be other layers and emotions and feelings, but if you do this daily, you will see significant changes.

  1. Oxygenation and Rehydration

Firstly, dehydration can significantly contribute to depression, headaches and other problems, so be sure to drink plenty of pure water and avoid coffee and soft drinks.

Water also provides oxygen to the body and we need oxygen to survive – obviously. However, in this day and age we are deprived of life-giving oxygen through the state of the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink. There are two other very simple and effective ways to increase oxygen intake:

The first is through Conscious Breathing, which we have already mentioned.

The second is through the use of Young Living pure, organic, unadulterated, therapeutic-grade essential oils. (I am listing this brand specifically because I have personally experienced these oils. I use them in my healing work, I know the efficacy of them and that they do not contain chemical fillers etc. Most other essential oils are aromatherapy-grade or perfume grade and do not have the same constituent availability and often contain chemicals. Be very aware about what you put on/in your body.)

Young Living Essential Oils transport oxygen through the body and contain sesquiterpenes that have the ability to go beyond the blood/brain barrier and deliver oxygen straight to the limbic system increasing the secretion of endorphins and stimulating the pineal and pituitary glands.

They also provide anti-oxidants and can raise the frequency of the body. For example, the human body itself is said to have a normal frequency range of 62MHz to 68MHz. Young Living’s Rose Oil has a frequency of 320MHz, Frankincense 147MHz and Lavender 118MHz. They therefore have the ability to significantly impact health and wellbeing and mood.

A few oils that are known to assist with depression are: Frankincense, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang and Jasmine. Plus Young Living have created a few unique blends like Hope and Joy and Valor. These oils can be diffused in a room or applied topically and have been a godsend for some of my clients.

  1. Belief systems

One of the biggest influences in the area of depression, lack of fulfilment and passion, and indeed all of our lives, is to do with our belief systems. Whether our beliefs come from family, friends, school, childhood experiences or traumatic events, they do shape our reality.

If you felt second best to an older sibling who was a high achiever, you probably have a belief system about not being good enough. Whether you are aware of it or not, this belief is like a computer program that runs in the background influencing all the other programs that are open on your computer, in other words, everything else that’s happening in your life from relationships to career to personal fulfilment.

Interestingly, belief systems can be quite simple to change. You may have heard that if you repeat affirmations for at least 21 days you can create a new behaviour or perspective, and this can happen. But most people aren’t that focused, it becomes tedious and boring to continually repeat something while wondering if it is actually going to work.

Theta Healing is one way to by-pass the tedium and effectively change your belief systems. You can learn to do Theta Healing yourself or go to a qualified Practitioner, and I highly recommend the later if you are unfamiliar with how this works. One simple Theta session can change dozens of beliefs and create new neural pathways to bring about new behaviours and eliminate unwanted ones. It can help you remember what it feels like to experience joy, to trust yourself, to express your feelings and to live without feeling that you are not good enough.

You already ARE Love

Mira was asked a question about self-love recently and as it is such a common question I decided to share . . .

Mira, how can I love myself more?

This is an amusing question, dear ones, because you either love yourself or you do not. What you are really asking is, what specific things can you do to feel this love more in your everyday life? And we would ask you to imagine a dark room, and inside this room is a black box, and in-side this box is the brightest, whitest light you can imagine— visible only where a few shards peek through tiny cracks in the box. The light is you and the box is your human reality. So the question becomes, how much of the love that you have within you are you ready to bring into your life, how much of this love are you ready to allow to shine and radiate outwards? You see, it is already there. You already ARE love. You cannot really be more love because you simply are it already.

What you can do is allow yourself to bring this more into your life. Of course, being in your joy is one way to express this love. Sharing your skills and gifts with others, following your passion and being very present with yourself. As these things expand more in your life it will bring you to a greater place of love. The quiet moments when you sit and acknowledge who you are, when you breathe deep into your belly and feel into your divinity, when you walk in nature and feel your connection to all things. These are the moments when you allow your light to shine brighter, when you acknowledge it and feel it. But understand that even in those moments when you do not see it, it is still there. It is always there. It is why I have told you that there is an element of love in every experience – even those experiences you term ‘negative’ – because there is no way that love cannot be present, because every human being IS love. Many have just shut themselves off, hidden beneath the baggage that they carry, the density within which they live, the limitations of the human mind.

We invite you to remind yourself from time to time that you ARE love (no matter what). This understanding brings a deeper perspective of who you really are. It allows you to have those moments of recognition instead of seeking to find more love which sets up a game, a challenge that you must overcome, something that you must find, it begins a journey of striving to achieve something. You do not need to ‘achieve’ something that you already are. You simply allow it.
